Southern Cuisine

I've just spent three days in Kentucky. Eastern Kentucky. Yes, riveting. (Mock trial, if you must know.)

All I can say about southerners (can you say, Cracker Barrel, Waffle House, and DQ?) is that they seem to have absolutely no respect for the empty space in one's arteries that allows blood to flow freely. Or for correct grammar for that matter. Hmph.

Still, "dumplin's" are good.

Wow, if you think Eastern Kentucky is Southern, you ain't seen nothin yet. We in the true Southeast don't consider Kentucky south. Anyways, not the point.

Come hither to the real heartland and you'll find real southern hospitality as well as artery clogging delicacies. It's truly a marvel that I'm still alive at 24 after having lived my whole life in Alabama and Georgia.

Those places you named -- Cracker Barrel, Waffle House and DQ -- aren't close to being the best representation of the region, though Waffle House holds a special place in my heart as I spent many a late night there after going out at the University of Georgia.

Yay, easy condescension!

Look, there's every reason to believe that southerners hate me simply because I'm homosexual. No less 86% of Mississippians voted to ban same-sex marriage (which does not directly trasnalte into "hate" towards homosexuals, but let's face it, the correlations between opinion on gay marriage and opinion on homosexuals are striking).

I've lived in the South, I've spent time in the South, and I've been called a fag in the South. So if I choose to make fun of tons of fried food, and a drawl that most Southerners will admit they're pretty proud of--both of which things that Southerners can choose--I don't see what's wrong with that.

Talk about easy condescension.

As a southerner and a homosexual, I must ask, what is the point if you're of a group that is often ridiculed, of ridiculing a different group?

And yes a Southerner may be able to choose or not to choose to fulfil certain of the stereotypes applied to a Southerner. But he or she cannot choose or not choose to be a Southerner. Tell Yankees you're from Tennessee, and they'll assume you're an inbred ignorant racist hick, just as if you tell someone you're gay they often assume you're a prissy nancy boy.
